How to Live BIG
Brene Brown teaches a concept called Living Big that I'd like to share with you.
BIG stands for Boundaries, Integrity, and Generosity.
Boundaries - getting clear on what's okay and what's not okay.
This is a space of getting to know ourselves better.
Of being more honest with ourselves about what we really want.
About being willing to see and hear ourselves and not justify away our wants and needs.
Sometimes people in our lives do things that are not okay with us, and it's important to identify this for ourselves.
Integrity - Choosing courage over comfort; choosing what is right over what is fun, fast, or easy; and choosing to practice our values rather than simply professing them.
I'll confess, this was hard for me to learn to implement, and I still have to take a deep breath and courage up before speaking up.
I'd spent a lifetime giving in so I didn't rock the boat.
Not speaking up because it would make others uncomfortable.
Avoiding contention by not voicing my opinion.
Since implementing this self-integrity into my life more frequently, I live in so much more peace.
I am being true to me and to my values and it feels really good.
Self-integrity is a must if we are going to grow into our best selves.
Generosity - Working from assumptions and intentions of compassion and grace.
This is the concept and belief that everyone is doing the best they can.
Sometimes when we see other people's actions it can be hard to believe, but generally I believe it's true.
And if it's not, then at least I'm a better person when I believe it's true.
Very few people I've ever met are intentionally trying to mess up their lives and the lives of the people they love.
But when I try to decide if they are, I get all judgy about them and their behavior.
And things rarely go well when I get all judgy.
Instead, if I am generous with believing people are doing the best they can, it's so much easier for me to show up as the loving, kind, Christlike person I really want to be.
It's a thought that serves me very well.
And Living BIG feels amazing!
