Stuck in Indecision

I work with a lot of clients who just feel stuck.

And they don't know what to do about it.

But it's not as difficult as we make it out to be.

Feeling stuck comes from a thought such as, 'I don't know what the right decision is here.'

And becauseĀ we think there is a 'right' decision, we often freeze in making a decision for fear that we will make the 'wrong' decision.

But what if we decided that in most cases, there is no 'right' or 'wrong' decision?

What if we look at the choices as options that will give us a different experience, and that we get to choose the experience we want to have?

Some will lead us to consequences we like, and some we will not like.

And these can sometimes be the easier decisions to make.

Some, we just don't know what the consequences will be, and that's okay, too.

Because even if we choose and then later decide it was the 'wrong' decision, that's okay, becauseĀ two new things are in play at this point.

1. Ā If we go back on our decision we just go back to where we currently are, and

2. Ā You'll have more information about the decision than you previously had, and most likely a better idea of what direction you want to go.

But just being willing to make a decision and get moving gets us unstuck, even if we decide later on that we would like to make a different decision.

Indecision keeps us stuck and doesn't allow us to move forward.

Several years ago Jeffrey Holland told a story about coming to a fork in the road and not knowing which way was the way home.

They prayed about it and felt to follow one of the roads.

A few miles later that road came to a dead end, so they turned around and followed the other road.

The blessing in this 'wrong' decision, was that now they could move forward with full confidence that the other road was the 'right' one.

Often our decisions are like this.Ā

Just moving forward will bring information that will help clarify our decision.

But choosing to stay stuck in indecision doesn't allow us any movement and doesn't give us any additional information.

And ultimately, growth and progress is made by moving, not by staying in the same place.

So, if you're feeling stuck, make the best decision you can with the information you currently have and move on it, remembering that no decision is perfect and every decision has lovely and not-so-lovely consequences.

Pretty soon you'll feel unstuck and you will be gathering information for your next decision.
